Montreal's Brother André
Aug. 5th, 2009 06:02 pmBrother André is sometimes referred to as Montreal's patron saint, but that's not technically true since his canonization is still in process.
Brother André began building what's now St. Joseph's Oratory in 1904, but most people don't visit the site (which is massive) for Joseph, they visit it for the healing powers of André, making the Oratory one of the most-visited shrines in the world.
Many crutches and canes of those healed hang on the walls. I'm not normally moved by such displays, but
I'm really glad I went on my first visit to Montreal (brought by a native guide), and have been back several times since.
