Worldcon Guide to the Deirdre
Aug. 3rd, 2009 10:25 amBecause Rick and I missed Worldcon the last two years, I've probably missed out on meeting some of you.
Here's some things that may explain some weirdnesses of the Deirdre at Worldcon:
1) I live with chronic pain and chronic fatigue, so everything I do will be "as circumstances permit." As I start to feel better thanks to thyroid medication, I'm also doing more, which means I can be just as exhausted, just in a bit better shape.
2) I am crowd-phobic and have sound-triggered migraines, so unless your party has sufficient room for everyone to sit down and is very quiet, I probably will not make it. In fact, I'm pretty much allergic to con parties, and you almost certainly won't see me in the SFWA suite. If I go to parties, it'll usually be opposite the masquerade.
3) Due to a spinal injury, my right leg goes numb when standing or walking after some random interval, and it doesn't have to be fully numb for me to collapse, nor is the progression deterministic or linear.
If you're standing in the middle of a corridor talking to someone else and yelling would disturb ten other people and waiting to grab your attention might mean that I injure you and six other people in my fall, I'm going to walk through those standing in the middle of the corridor because that is the least intrusive and safest thing to do and you shouldn't have been so inconsiderate anyway (and especially not so inconsiderate as to be facing AWAY from people coming down the corridor so you could move out of the way). This happened at a recent con when I barely made it to a place to sit -- my leg gave out as I was lowering myself into the chair.
4) When I'm tired, it's harder for me to put name with face with context immediately. I'll figure it out eventually.
