Movies: The Ugly Truth
Jul. 27th, 2009 01:46 amI love romantic comedies.
They seem to come in two major flavors: the regrettable woman softens/grows up in order to get a relationship (The Proposal, New In Town, Confessions of a Shopaholic) or the regrettable guy softens/grows up in order to get a relationship (Ghosts of Girlfriends Past).
I don't have a really strong preference for which one, though I must confess to liking bad boy roles. This film would be one of them, as will be obvious from the trailer.
All that said, the low tomatometer rating made me suck in my gut before going, but I love Katherine Heigl (I especially loved 27 Dresses) and I like Rob Luketic's direction and open process.
And?
I enjoyed the hell out of it. I heard Hangover-level laughing from some of the audience.
I also confess to liking comedies that make me embarrassed enough to cover my face. This one did. Confessions of a Shopaholic also did, as did The Full Monty.
The Ugly Truth was written by three women, two of whom wrote 10 Things I Hate About You, one of my favorite movies of the last ten years.
I will probably go see it again.
It's unusual to see a romantic comedy rated R, and this one perhaps over-used its rating. Most seem to think that the restaurant scene in When Harry Met Sally was more iconic, but it's also an entirely different scene. This one was, I think, the more difficult acting job and a much longer scene, so I'm going to give The Ugly Truth the nod on this one.
Besides, it gives an entirely new meaning to the term "wardrobe malfunction."
