"Myxedema, stemming from both the hyperthyroid and hypothyroid conditions, results from the accumulation of increased amounts of hyaluronic acid and chondroitin sulfate in the dermis in both lesional and normal skin. The mechanism that causes myxedema is still not yet understood, although animal model studies suggest that thyroid hormones affect the synthesis and catabolism of mucopolysaccharides and collagen by dermal fibroblasts." Okay, here's what I'm getting:

1) hyaluronic acid is intracellular matrix goo
2) Chondroitin sulfate is an acid/sugar chain
3) in myxedema, there's more of both in the goo part, which thickens the skin
4) they don't know why, but
5) thyroid hormones are implicated

The last part I don't understand.
