Trailer Here.

If you read the reviews on Rotten Tomatoes for this film, you'll see that a bunch of people thought it was trying to be a stoner comedy. I doubt any of the reviewers gave it more than 15 minutes.

While Surfer, Dude had comedic moments, it's a film about an existential crisis, it's a science fiction film, and it's a romance.

Yes, I said it's a science fiction film.

Once upon a time, I saw Ray Bradbury speak, and in that speech he mentioned that Singing in the Rain was his favorite science fiction film because it explored how people coped with technology shifts.

By that standard, Surfer, Dude is a science fiction film: the main plot (yes, there is one) revolves around the main character being destitute and being tempted by being part of a reality surfing game that he just can't bring himself to play along with, even after there's a drought of waves for weeks on end. The B plot is the romance plot starring Alexie Gilmore. The two plots dovetail nicely.

Now, it's certainly not the best movie I've seen, but if you have a fondness for the subject matter, it's more worth your time than Rotten Tomatoes would lead you to expect.
