Day 4: Mobile

deirdreGot up late, missed free breakfast by a handful of minutes. Drove, bleary eyed, to Waffle House a block away, where the server kept shoving more coffee at me.
The most important thing was what I did first: finding places for my characters. I was looking for a place for a club, and I saw a building mid-block. Upon first sighting, I said to myself, "that's exactly what I was looking for!" Turns out, it's actually a club already. Win!
Then I drove around getting the lay of the land, got turned around a few times. Decided to head to Bellingrath Gardens early, but once I was there, realized I still had time to visit Dauphin (daw-fin) Island. Good light, so I did that first. Walked around an educational center that was really neat, and took pictures.
The drive gave me a sense of terrain, and at first I thought Huntsville was a big detour out of my way, but it gave me an idea of what was upstream from New Orleans vs. Mobile. Even on Dauphin Island, there's still trees -- it's not salty land like much of Southern (southwest of NO) Louisiana, which is all marsh grasses.
Bellingrath Gardens does a completely over the top holiday display each year. No joke, I walked almost non-stop for two hours. Photos are forthcoming.
I've gotta say, I see what my friend said about Mobile -- it's got a lot of charm, doesn't fling it in your face, and it has interesting terrain and buildings. I'd definitely come back not just to here, but to visit the civil rights sites elsewhere in the state and to go back to the NASA stuff.
Tomorrow I'm driving back to New Orleans, so I'm overdue for sleep.
