I'm badly out of shape.

I want not to be.

I have fibromyalgia, which has been the limiting factor before.

Work has a challenge: walk (or run or whatever) 50 miles in 6 weeks. The whole company is doing it (it's not mandatory), and they are giving away things I don't really care about. It's not about the prizes anyway.

You need a Nike+ sensor, compatible shoes or a pouch, an iPod Nano or iPod Touch or iPhone (and I have two of 3 of these devices, plus the sensor, plus the shoes on order), and then record all your exercise. Some of this can be done on ellipticals or treadmills too, which I have access to, so that allows for a bit of variation.

Catch is: that's over a mile a day, on average. I did 1.8 yesterday, and I'm pretty wiped.

So here's what I thought about it, and it's kind of spreadsheety.

1) Assume I'll be able to go 10% more each week. [my chiropractor said that was fairly standard for training]
2) Break up my workout weeks into three long days, three short days, where a long day is twice as much as a short day. So, essentially, I'll have 4.5 exercise units a week.
3) Leave one day completely exercise fallow.

This means my first week, a long day will be 1.44 miles and a short day 0.72 miles, and I'll do three of each.

I don't have to do the exercise all at once, so I'm thinking a long day is really two short days: one morning, one evening. So nine total workouts a week.

The alternative is to do less frequent, but much longer workouts. I think (but am not sure) that would burn me more. If I walked every other day and even-length walks, I'd have to start with 1.84 miles (about what I did yesterday) and end up with 2.97 mile walks in the sixth week.

The current plan has me starting at 1.44 miles and going up to 2.32 miles in the sixth week.

When I was a teenager, I did one of those 20-mile walk things and was completely wiped the next day, and my dad made me get out of the house and mow our foot-high lawn, pointing out that exercising the next day was a good idea. In that instance, he was right. That said, I'm not sure my plan works.

Thoughts?

Yes, I can certainly modify it mid-stream, I'm just trying to think the ramifications through.

I'm not sure, given my condition, that this is possible for me to do. However, I will have a go at it.
