Writerly Organization
Jul. 13th, 2011 07:40 pmIn all the years I've been writing, I've never actually trunked stories.
Sure, there's plenty of them that do not work and likely never will, but they were my darlings anyway.
Catch is, I'd get overwhelmed opening my short stories folder, and I'd stare at the hundred plus stories in there. Some are finished. A few are sold (not all sf/f). About a dozen need tweaks. Quite a few are fragments or ideas, but not stories (yet).
So I've moved them into groups, and trunked ones I don't ever think I'm going to work on to where they'll sell.
In scanning through them, I realized that one of my early nits was writing weak "observer" female viewpoint characters (in first person, no less). I get why: initially, I was only able to write first person, and I'd learned to read through a lot of omniscient viewpoints, so that was how I was able to work my way into the story. I don't need that crutch now, but it'd be a total PITA to re-write those pieces from before I was able to discard it.
I would love to re-write my first novel sometime, but it's horrifically dated at this point. (Near-future SF with beepers? Srsly? Ah well, that was then.)
Also, I finally joined the bandwagon and got a Facebook author page. Do what thou wilt with that info.
