I heard this anecdote about Calvin Coolidge when I lived in Vermont, so it must be true. At least mostly true. (It's less often told than the "you lose" anecdote, anyway.)

Back in the day, Cal went to a boarding school, and lived in a building where the door opened right to a staircase leading up to the second floor, where all the boys his age lived.

The headmaster was not, to put it kindly, the nicest man, and so the kids had a plan: take an old rickety wood stove that wasn't in use and tie it to the door before the headmaster arrived.

As usual, the headmaster pulls open the door with great force and bellows inside -- only to see the woodstove clattering down the stairway at him. He dodges just in time and the woodstove ploomphs into the snowbank.

The headmaster runs up the staircase. Every door is ajar with young boys peeking out. Every door, that is, save one.

"You! Why weren't you watching?" The headmaster goes on to accuse the young boy of setting up the stove. After all, he must be guilty.

Cal shakes his head in denial and replies, "t'weren't mah stove."
