Rick and I went to see The Brothers Bloom tonight.

Some people asked me what I meant about overshooting an ending.

I can now say: if you watch this flick, I can demonstrate to you where that point in time is. It's true that had the portrayal of Stephen been different, the current ending might have been a more emotional climax than it is, but as portrayed, it's not the climax.

No spoilers, but let's just say the movie ran uncomfortably long (probably 15-20 minutes) after the emotional climax of the film.

This is where people start rustling in their seats, thinking it must be over. I was one of them.

Some cool ideas, but Rick's right: they put the cool/weird/funny (e.g., one-legged cat) early in the movie and then didn't keep it up.

Also? So not St. Petersburg. If you're going to film it in Serbia and Romania to save money, why not make the setting uniquely Serbian and Romanian? Some of that scenery could (might have been) in Kansas.

Also? The macguffin went missing.

Still, Adrien Brody managed to portray a character even more screwed up than his character in The Darjeeling Limited, so he gets an A and a cookie for that. Rachel Weisz did a great job as well. Mark Ruffalo was too smarmy. Rinko Kikuchi was playing someone who could have been a better character if the script had permitted it, but she did a fine job in her weird role.
