Denmark: Copenhagen
Sep. 6th, 2008 04:27 pmWhen we woke up, the sky was rainy and stormy, but by the time we got to the dock, the day was clear and sunny, which meant we got to drive around northern Copenhagen, the grounds of Fredenborg castle, and Fredriksborg castle in fabulous weather. We were able to tromp up to the iron chain in front of Fredenborg even though the royal family was currently in residence. While the country's soldiers reside outside the perimeter, there was no visible formal means to limit entry to the castle. If you ever happen to be near Washington D.C., compare that to the perimeter around the White House.
Apparently, there's some crazy people who swim in the sea every day of the year, even during winter. The Danes call them Vikings, no relation to the Vikings of old.
Cars are extremely expensive in Denmark; an average car runs about $200,000 US dollars, about ten times what it'd cost in the U.S. Tax rates are high, and Denmark is not a rich country, but it's richer than the next two areas we'll see.
Fredriksborg castle was amazing, and I took a lot of photos that'll be available on my Flickr photostream tagged with europe2008.
Interesting cultural point: there are a lot of bicyclists in Denmark, and it seems to be laid out very well for bicyclists. Many people use bicycles as their primary means of transport year-round.
It was sad to say goodbye to Denmark.
